7 Signs Your Phone Battery Needs Replacing
Every phone battery wears out. Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity a little with each charge cycle, and after two or three years of daily use most phones feel noticeably weaker. The good news is that a worn battery is one of the simplest and most worthwhile repairs. Here is how to tell whether yours needs replacing.
1. The phone no longer lasts a day
If a phone that used to last from morning to night now needs a top-up by lunch, with the same apps and the same habits, the battery has probably lost capacity. Before blaming the battery, check Settings for a single app using an unusual share of battery. If nothing stands out, wear is the likely cause.
2. Sudden shutdowns at 15, 20 or 30 percent
This is one of the clearest signs. A worn battery cannot deliver enough power when the phone briefly needs a lot, such as opening the camera or a game, so the phone switches off even though it showed charge remaining. It often happens more in cold air-conditioned rooms.
3. The percentage jumps around
Dropping from 40 to 10 percent in minutes, or climbing quickly after plugging in, suggests the battery cannot hold a stable charge.
4. The phone feels slow
Some phones reduce performance when the battery is worn to avoid unexpected shutdowns. If your phone feels sluggish and battery health is low, a new battery may make it feel quicker again.
5. The back or screen is lifting
This one needs attention quickly. A swollen battery can push the back panel outwards, lift the screen at one edge, or make the phone rock on a flat table. If you see this:
- Stop charging the phone.
- Do not press on the bulge or try to open the phone.
- Keep it away from heat, and book a replacement soon.
6. The phone gets unusually hot
Phones get warm while charging or gaming. But if it gets hot during light use, or while charging overnight, the battery may be struggling. Heat also speeds up battery wear, so it is worth checking.
7. Battery health is low
Many phones can tell you directly:
- iPhone: Settings, Battery, Battery Health shows maximum capacity. If it is well below where it started and you notice the symptoms above, it is time to consider a replacement.
- Apple Watch: Settings, Battery, Battery Health.
- Android: this varies. Some Samsung models show battery information in the Samsung Members app or Device care. On other brands, look under Settings, Battery.

Things that are not usually the battery
- Phone only charges at an angle, or the cable feels loose: this is usually the charging port, often blocked with lint. See charging port repair.
- Battery drain started right after an update: this can settle down after a few days as the phone re-indexes. Give it time before replacing anything.
- Phone does not turn on at all: it could be the battery, the port or something else. A technician can check in person.
How to make a new battery last longer
- Avoid leaving the phone in a hot car or on a sunny windowsill.
- Try not to run it down to zero regularly.
- Use a decent charger and cable.
- Remove a thick case while fast charging if the phone gets hot.
